Identify the leader

Imagine you're in an office building standing outside a meeting room. Through the glass, you can see a team discussing whatever it is they're working on.

There are eight people in the room, of which one is the leader. Now, I want to ask you to try to spot the leader.

How do you think you would be able to identify a leader without being able to follow a conversation? What would you focus on?

Is the leader:

- the person sitting at the end of the table?

- the person who's doing the most talking?

- the person the rest of the group listens to?

- the person everyone else is focused on?

- the person whose posture oozes authority?

- (one of) the oldest-looking people in the room?

- (one of) the oldest-looking men in the room?

Or, could the leader be:

- sitting anywhere?

- the person who's mostly listening?

- the person who's focused on each and everyone in the room?

- the person whose posture oozes an energy of "I've got your back"?

- anyone in the room?

Let's get rid of the first, outdated and even toxic, checklist.

Leadership isn't confined to the person who feels they ARE the leader because their position affords them some kind of authority. It goes beyond age, seating arrangement, gender, and the spotlight. It's about influence, connection, empathy, and a commitment to the team's success.

Strong leaders focus on self-leadership and helping others become leaders too.
